Call--Ecological Survey on the wetland)
Ever
since the team began to operate, the bio-census to these four
wetlands has been our daily routine. We are devoted to the observation
of both faunal and botanical new residents as well as the water and
diet in these four wetlands.
The instructor said that the purpose of Biology Call is to find out
the reasons which interfere with the growth of
creatures. Thus, if we find a large number of specific
dead species, we'll busy ourselves with inquiring the causes of death
and try to drive them away. Hopefully the ecosystem in these wetlands
could be steady as soon as possible, so the main cause of death will
be the seasonal element but other short-

term variations.
It is necessary to look up more
information during observation. And to know the names is the first
step to observe. It is lucky to have so many books related to wetlands
in the library at school. Besides, science teachers and websites are
also very good resources.
Well, are you ready? Please take these quizzes first: What's the
difference between Cyathea
lepifera (J. Sm. ex Hook.)
Copel and spinulose tree fern? What kind
of fern is it in the picture at right side? Why do its leaves bud?
(Please
check the answers from our fern interpreter, Yi-Kai , or look at the
study he put on the website.)
The
amount of the botanical species inside and beside the wetlands has
been more than 100 after their establishment. Although animals are
movable, there are still around 10-20 species being seen.
In order to understand these species and their ecological
environment, we have learned and experienced ecology with the
instructor on every Saturday. To encounter these creatures made us
excited, however, the great number of dead fish also made us
sorrowful. In addition, we also do overall bio-census on the four
wetlands for twice both in summer and autumn to monitor the invasive
species and ecological stability. Even though we haven't known each
creature's name yet, we'll still try our best to find them out. Please
check the following link to see the plentiful species in these
artificial wetlands.

The following picture is taken when I released the crab I raised. I've
been missing it since the release. However, it was so shy that it's
hard to take a shot. So this is the only picture of crabs.
In the wetlands at school, there are lots of animals which we might
not know all of them. And let me introduce them to you!
Firstly, let us introduce the amphibious creatures in the wetlands.
They are bullfrogs (male and adult form) , Chinese bullfrogs (adult
form), Rana l. limmocharis, Hyla chinensis, Rana
adenopleura, Rana guenther, and Bufo melanosticus.
These frogs lay lots of eggs
in the wetlands. Secondly, we also found some fish including
Oryzias latipes,
Gambusia affinis(Baird et Girard),
and Crucian carp(Carassius auratus )。The
insects we've found are
Orthetrum glaucum,
Crocothemis servilia servilia、Crocothemis
servilia servilia,
Neurothemis ramburii
(female and spawn),
Anax
nigrofasciatus nigrofasciatus, Pantala
flavescens, codes trivialis ,
Agriocnemis femina oryzae,
Coeliccia cyanomelas、Coeliccia
cyanomelas Ris,
Pseudagrion pilidorsum pilidorsum,
Ischnura senegalenisis,
Aquarlus elongatus
(Water Strider),
Notonectidae
and other larvae.
Don't you think it's amazing that we can see so many creatures at
school? As long as you pay more attention to observe, you'll find lots
of aquatic rarely seen in the wetland.
